The beginner path
A calm, ordered plan for complete beginners. Follow the stages below one at a time – each links to the guides that go deeper.
Before you begin
Every successful plan we have seen starts with the same honest self-check. Answer these on paper before you open a single website. Your answers decide which path makes sense – and which ones to ignore for now.
1. How many hours can you give each week? Five hours a week and twenty-five hours a week lead to very different plans. Freelancing and remote jobs need reliable blocks of time; blogging and YouTube need steady weekly output over many months.
2. What can you invest? You can start most skill-based paths with a basic laptop and internet connection. Online businesses may need a small budget for a domain, tools or stock. Never borrow money to start.
3. What do you already know? Good English writing, design sense, comfort with spreadsheets, teaching experience, a trade or a hobby – all of these can shorten your path.
Mentor's note
Pick one path and give it ninety days before you judge it. Switching every two weeks is the most common reason beginners never earn anything.
Choose a direction
There is no single best way to earn online. Here is how the main paths compare for a beginner. Choose the row that fits your time, skills and patience today – you can add a second path later.
| Path | Good fit if you… | Typical time to first income | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancing | Have or can learn a service skill (design, writing, development, video, marketing, admin support). | Often several weeks to a few months after your profile and samples are ready. | Freelancing guides |
| Remote jobs | Want a regular salary, have good English and can work fixed hours with a team. | Depends on applications and interviews – commonly one to several months. | Remote job guides |
| Blogging & YouTube | Enjoy creating content, can publish consistently and are happy to wait. | Usually many months; monetisation has eligibility rules. | Blogging · YouTube |
| Online business | Have a product idea, some budget and patience for marketing and customer service. | Varies widely – plan for months of testing. | Online business · E-commerce |
| Side hustles | Want flexible, smaller tasks alongside study or a job. | Can be quick to start, but pay is usually modest and irregular. | Side hustles |
The 90-day plan
Days 1-7
Create a professional email address, secure your accounts with two-step verification, and write down your chosen path. Read the cornerstone guide for that path in full before signing up anywhere.
Days 8-45
Study the core skill with free or low-cost material and practise every day. Recreate real-world tasks: redesign a local shop’s flyer, write a sample blog post, build a one-page website.
Days 46-70
Turn your best practice work into a simple portfolio. Create your marketplace profile, CV or channel page. Write clear descriptions of what you offer and who it helps.
Days 71-90
Apply, pitch or publish consistently. Track what you send and what happens. Improve one thing each week. Set up your payment method before your first payment arrives.
